      Merry Christmas To Me …
      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I COVETED the Kindle DX for several weeks before Christmas, when I received it as a gift from my husband. I kept visiting Amazon, comparing features between the smaller and larger product, dreaming of how I’d put it to use, checking out the books to make sure my favorite authors were represented, etc. I was afraid I’d be disappointed, because I’d never actually physically seen one, but … I absolutely LOVE it! I make the text a little larger to compensate for my deteriorating mid-range eye sight, so I can read for hours at a time. The contrast is wonderful and I don’t feel like I’m looking at a computer, which I didn’t want since I do it all day. Some say they forget it’s not a book. I can’t say that, but I can say the difference doesn’t bother me.

The features I really enjoy: the ability to instantly have a book I want and begin to read it immediately; relatively inexpensive new releases; the opportunity to try different authors at little to no cost; having so many books at my fingertips in such a compact space (for travel and home); the built in dictionary that’s so easy to use and the intuitive ease of the buttons. I read so fast that when I travel I never have enough space to bring as many books as I need to keep me happy, so this is the perfect solution. I’ll also be happy to have them organized instantly by author instead of having them scattered, piled and boxed all over the house.

Enhancements I would like: ability to categorize into books that are read/unread without archiving books I’m temporarily finished with, a little less glare with my reading light.

Other than the enhancements I’ve suggested, there’s nothing I don’t love about the Kindle DX. I haven’t used the download feature for pdf documents, etc., so I can’t speak to that. But for what I want – pleasure reading – it’s perfect.

I use the Kindle during my Exercise routine and love the ability to change fonts so using the tredmill can be done at the same time I am reading, it sure makes the time fly when I’m exercising!

My first Kindle (DX Model) and I’m pleased.
      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m a 46 year old male who works in the Information Technology field (25+ years) as a network designer/administrator and software developer. I typically don’t read for pleasure. Mainly for learning about something or someone. My primary reason for purchasing an ebook reader is to save bookshelf space and to be able to more easily carry several books with me at a time. The books I read are typically over 1000 pages and very bulky/heavy (also more difficult to hold on to while reading).

I have had my Kindle DX since early Nov. 2009. I did purchase the extended warranty and the leather cover. Overall, I’m very happy with my DX – I will be keeping it. I had several false-starts in making my Kindle purchase as the cost of the larger DX model was pretty steep in my opinion. I read dozens of reviews on the smaller Kindle and the DX as well as researched other ebook readers (including the upcoming B&N Nook) before making the decision to finally try the DX.

      Pros:

      - Great screen size for reading comfortably. The smaller screen would not be good for me.

      - The device is relatively small in comparison to the HP 17″ laptop I carry around. A lot lighter.

      - It’s easier to hold the Kindle DX versus the typical 2 inch+ thick and heavy books I used to purchase.

      - I can carry hundreds of books with me on a single, lightweight device.

      - Navigation is easy and intuitive on the Kindle.

      - Being able to increase text (font) size is nice.

      - Being able to go from portrait to landscape display mode by turning the device is handy.

      - Length of battery is great as long as the wireless option is turned off.

      - Books for the Kindle typically cost less than the printed copy.

      Cons:

      - Limited functionality with PDF files. You can view them easily, but not increase text/font size. Images in PDF files are difficult to read on occasion. Text is typically fine with larger font size used to create the PDF file.

      - Organization of book titles is non-existent. All books show up in a single list on the Home page of the Kindle DX.

      - Many computer-related (programming, etc.) books are still not available on the Kindle DX.

      - Screenshot images in some books are a bit fuzzy. Still readable, but not as clear as the printed image would be.

      - Some text characters appear to be “broken” in some books. It’s as if the fonts used by the publisher do not render properly on the Kindle and are therefore slightly more diffult to read.

      - Cost

Bottom line… this is the only ebook reader I found with the larger screen size. It does the job for me. The cost is a bit steep, but will likely pay off in the long run as I found most of the books I read are less expensive for the Kindle compared to the printed copies. Also, being able to carry a huge library of technical reference books on a single lightweight device is very handy in my career.

      Enjoy!

I bought this for my wife at Xmas. She had broken her writst and is an avid reader but couldn’t hold a book in her one hand. The Kindle did the trick and she loves it more than any other present she has received. She became proficient in its use almost immediately which shows how easy it really is. Keep up the good work.

I bought the Kindle for my son who is college. He loves the dictionary feature as well as the ease with which he can find and obtain books. He is actually beginning to stay home and read instead of always having to run around with friends. It’s nice to see him excited about reading again.

I gave this to my wife as a Xmas present. She loves it. It is great. I am glad we got the big screen version. Her only issue is that the intenal gyroscope is a bit sensitive and sometimes the page flips from portait to landscape sort of by itself.

Love it. The page refresh is noticably fast than the orginal Kindle (version 1). The Auto Portrait/Landscape reorientation is great. Contrast is much better. Better life is WAAAAAAY better. User Interface is greatly improved. Reduced control surface (compared to Kindle Version 1) is great (You couldn’t even pickup the Kindle Version 1 without accidentally clicking a button and sending the display off to who knows where).

I am an early adopter Kindle user and have always loved this device, but when the Kindle-DX came out I knew I would have to have it someday. My friends surprised me with it as a retirement gift — so it is really extra special. I think of them every time I sit down to read. It’s also wonderful being able to read without wearing glasses all of the time. The DX is also great for cookbooks and textbooks. If you have the flip-over jacket you can stand it up like an easel and read it hands-free. I have had the DX for a month and use it all the time, my original Kindle has become my on-the-go reader now since it fits in a purse.

I became acquainted with the electronic reader several months ago, and did some research. The ones Amazon.com offered were more to my liking with their features, the number of books available for downloading, and the quality of the product.

I am thoroughly enjoying my 9.7″ Kindle. The screen is large enough, no glare, and the words are easy to read. I find I can read faster with the Kindle than with a book. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys the art of reading as I do. Thanks for such a great product.

Although I love the feel of a book in my hand and turning of each page, I cannot believe someone didn’t come up with the idea of a “Kindle” a long time ago. I have always removed the protective cover jacket on all of my books so I don’t damage or tear the edge. No worry any longer! I’m impressed with the ease of ordering, the lightning quick speed in which the download is completed and the ease of navigating with the menu button, literally right at my fingertip. If I put the Kindle down and return later to start reading again, “it” knows exactly where I left off. I can continue to read or I can easily “go back” to the previous page if I’ve forgotten what I read. I highly recommend this item for anyone who likes to read. If you LOVE TO READ you will wonder why you didn’t purchase the Kindle before today.

I love the Kindle. I do wish I had gotten the smaller one so it would fit in my purse. I have to carry an extra totle to carry the DX Kindle and that is inconvenient and I realize I would never need to have 3500 books stored on the Kindle. So, unless you need the larger size for larger letters ladies, stick with the smaller one!!

I am a book lover by heart having an extensive library so I was leery of buying the Kindle DX. Also, I tried other electronic readers and was not satisfied with them. After seeing all the positive reviews, I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. There are few items that I purchased in my lifetime that I can say “I’m glad I bought that!” Usually they are just purchases that I could do with or without. Not the Kindle DX, I add this to the “I am so glad I bought it” catagory. I can see this having the same household need as the Microwave oven in time. It is easy to use, has lots of storage space, convenient, and makes reading a real joy. If you are on the fence about whether to buy this or not, trust the majority in the reviews, it is almost a must have.

      From personal point of view-

      Pros

      1) I reduced print-outs significantly by saving PDF files directly on KDX. I can read it very quickly just like reading a paper print-out. Significant benefit for frequent business travelers. I no longer worry about the heavy documents in my bag.

      2) Reduced book storage

      3) Battery life – much better than PC and Blackberry thanks to its display. I rarely care about it.

Improvement I would like to see in the near future

      1) Heavy weight. Display uses glass for its substrate, which makes KDX heavy and less sturdy. Do not drop Kindle on a hard surface. Books are OK.

      2) Color. I would like to see beautiful COLOR Magazines/Newspapers. B/W graphics and pictures on magazine do not look great. Magazines/Newspapers without it gives me different experience.

      3) Input. I would like to write & save my short notes (or color highlight) in books and PDF, just like I do in reading a book or a document.

      4) keyboard. Does not feel perfect. I would like to get a better “TOUCH” and “FEEL”. This is a key for real interactivity.

Very strongly recommend for anyone who travel frequently or commute in a train/subway and read documents during transportation. However I hope AMAZON can update KDX and improve it continuously in the near future.

Really nice but a couple of things you should know
      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I got the Kindle DX for my Wife. She is disabled and reading helps take her mind off the pain.

She is pleased with her Kindle but has a couple of minor to moderate complaints I think you should hear.

Font size is scalable but for some reason it won’t allow this feature for books in PDF format as far we can tell. If it does she hasn’t been able to figure out how to do it. Not good if you have older eyes like us. Eyestrain is a common problem for her when trying to read a PDF format book because she can’t enlarge the font and the speech problem…see below.

My wife switches to speech mode when the pain is too great for her to read. Down side not mentioned….speech only allowed if the author of the book permits it and you don’t know this until after you buy the book and try to use it. Also speech won’t work for most PDF files. The speech tab/button is simply greyed out.

Occasional slow page loads are another annoyance.

Another big annoyance is trying to access the Kindle store and being told unable to connect because the service was too busy.

I got the DX over the standard Kindle because the standard is just flat out too small to see with older eyes. Like the difference between a hardcover and a small paperback. I am not happy that I had to pay double the price for only one third extra screen space though. I don’t believe it’s worth a mortgage payment for an extra 3 inches of viewable space. For the price I would have liked a protective case to go with it. Had to spend an extra $40 for that and then the extended warranty. I don’t normally go out for warranties because it’s not worth the cost 90% of the time but you just know this thing is gonna get dropped, have a drink spilled on it at some time or get a scratch on the screen. So in the end I invested well over $700. Only reason I did was to make my wife’s quality of life a little better. Seeing her happy makes it worth it to me. But if I were looking for a kindle DX for myself…..no way, simply too overpriced. Like I said….it’s a mortgage payment or close to it.

Other than that the Kindle is *almost* all that it claims to be and We are very please with it. Sharp crisp display if only greyscale. I take issue with the geryscale because you just know that next year they will introduce a color model. I think it’s also an issue when it comes to magazine subscriptions. Who wants to see pictures from People or Time in B&W or no pictures at all?

It’s got a great battery life and only a mild to moderate learning curve to use. Books and subscriptions to newspapers or magazines are very cheap even some free books and the Kindle store seems to have a large selection to choose from.

So overall…Nice but pricey and avoid anything in PDF format.

Hopefully these glitches will be ironed out in future updates to the Kindle’s firmware/software.

I have Palm’s ereader and I like it better than the Kindle. Here is a picture I took showing Palm’s E-reader on a Palm TX handheld: [...] That picture shows that Palm’s ereader and the e-ink display of the Kindle are not any different from each other. My Palm TX handheld has 128MB of internal memory and a 2GB memory card for extra storage. I store the ereader and the ebooks on the 2GB memory card and any other apps I want on the internal memory. This way, I can store over 7800 ebooks and still have lots of room for whatever apps I want. The 2GB Amazon Kindle is capped at 1500 ebooks…1500 vs 7800…Do the math.

      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I shopped around before I asked my husband to get me the Kindle DX for Christmas. Out of all of the wireless reading devices, I think Kindle has the most to offer. It is a little heavier than I like; however no heavier than a novel. The fact that I can have it landscape or portrait viewing is very handy! I also received the mighty bright light and the black leather cover. The light is perfect for reading anywhere and the cover not only protects the kindle but the cover flips back to help the kindle stand on it’s own.

I’m really enjoying my new toy! I’ve read 3 books since Christmas and am looking forward to the other options that it has available. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading! Don’t let it sit on a shelf somewhere! The price is a little hefty, but worth it.

The only downfall was the delivery. Amazon has a real problem getting items to people during the holiday season! This isn’t the first time I’ve had issues. This product was ordered on the 5th of December to be delivered by the 11th. By the 15th it still hadn’t arrived. We tried to have it tracked but they said they couldn’t until 2 weeks after it left the warehouse. By Dec 23rd, still no Kindle. We went around in circles with Amazon for another day before getting to speak with a real person that would help us. It was finally overnighted and we received it on 12/24.

Moving from Kindle 2 to Kindle DX
      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had used the Kindle 2 for a little more than 6 months when I decided to move up to the DX. A number of the technical books I had downloaded for the Kindle simply did not display properly on the smaller Kindle screen and I wanted a more useful PDF capability — even with the upgraded firmware that would turn the screen sideways, the standard Kindle still displayed PDFs in too small a format for me to see easily. With that in mind I bit the bullet and ordered the Kindle DX.

Pros: Everything that I was looking for when I bought the DX was there — better formatting for technical books, easy to read PDF’s, and just generally more screen space for comfortable reading — I find the DX a more useful device overall than the Kindle 2.

Cons: All right — it’s bigger, harder to carry around, and feels more fragile. I bought a good cover for it and that helps tremendously, but there is no question it takes up more room.

I really miss the buttons on both sides of the screeen — I could read the Kindle 2 with either hand — not a option with the DX.

That’s it — I got everything I was looking for in the upgrade and very few gripes with the new machine. Overall, I love the new DX and rate it as highly as I can.

I received my 9.7 Kindle about a month ago and absolutely fell in love with it. It is my first purchase of a digital reader so I read many other reviews and considered each one. I have some visual impairment so the larger screen appealed to me; the ability to adjust the font is a great feature. I find it easy to use, sensitive to movement in that the screen adjusts to landscape style, however, once you become aware of the sensitivity boundaries, this is not inconvenient. I have not used the key pad much, but I do find it hard to read as the keys are small and not bold enough in color for ease of visualization ( at least for me).

Ease of handling is great and I immediately purchased a jacket for protection and a light for reading in bed at night. I have not used it yet for forwarding PDF files from work though I hope to do that soon -this will be very helpful to me. It is a wonderful advancement that is allwing me to return to reading, especially for pleasure which I had given up due to eye fatigue after a day at work. Thank you!

I bought the Kindle DX as a Christmas gift for my husband so I am not using it myself. He really seems to love it though and uses it constantly! It seems to be of very high quality, but since he has only had if for a little over a month, time will tell whether or not it performs well later on. It is easy to use and the large reading screen is amazingly sharp and and easy on the eyes.

I was, however, horrified with the delivery of the product. Amazon really messed up this year when they decided to do all (or most) of their shipping via USPS. I was at work when the Kindle DX was delivered by our mailman. The Kindle DX was in a box with “Amazon Kindle DX” written in big letters on the top of the box. Since it was too large for the mailbox, it was put in a clear plastic bag and hung on the mailbox. Clearly, anyone driving by our house could see they contents of that bag and due to its high value, it was an easy target for thieves. Then, of course, my husband arrived later to get the mail and instantly saw what his “surprise gift” was, with its contents splattered all over the box. I was horrified and so upset that my big surprise was ruined. I also have to wonder what would have happened if someone had taken that hanging package from my mailbox before we had a chance to get it, since Amazon already had my money. I’m sure the Amazon switch in delivery vendors was a money-saving decision, but a bad choice for customers. And please take the name of the contents OFF the outside of the box!

I held out getting a Kindle because I simply love books so much. I didn’t realize how much I’d really prefer the kindle. I get the same feeling of a book but even with the large model, its not as heavy as newly released hard cover books and allows me to fold back the cover, showing only the page I”m reading without breaking the spine or needing to move more than my finger to turn a page
