LIke it better than my Tom Tom
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Last November (on “Black Friday”)I bought me a Tom Tom 300XL. Not to soon there after, I had a road trip to Las Vegas and used the Tom Tom for the first time on the way there. From get go, I had a problem not so much with the GPS itself but with the mounting ring – bracket. I found it to be not too secure and a little difficult to attach to the ring- bracket. Got to where I needed to get to with no problems. The next day when I attached it to the ring bracket and drove around for a short period, the GPS fell off of the ring, dropped from the windshield, hit the shifter and the GPS glass (on the display) shattered and was useless after that. As you may have guessed, the price after Black Friday jumped up quite a bit. So I began to look at other GPS’s and Amazon offered the Magellan Maestro 4700 at what I thought to be a good price. I read the reviews on the GPS here on Amazon as well as CNET and other review sites. The reviews were favorable and the price was low, so I bought it.
I have found the Magellan 4700 to be overall better that the Tom Tom 330xl.
On the plus side, the Magellan was easier to get started with (first time use),has a much more secure mounting bracket, and when driving on the freeway, it will show freeway signs that will be “highlighted” to show whether to go straight or move right or leftdepending upon if you were going to exit the freeway or not (the Tom Tom did not have this feature…). The Magellan has a card slot (not so with the Tom Tom). The Magellan aslo seems to aquire a signal faster that the Tom Tom…
Only gripes I have…. I am going deaf in my older age (too much loud rock music and shooting guns in my younger days!)and I wished the Magellan was a bit louder. The Tom Tom was louder.
The Tom Tom also gave you a choice of “voices” to hear your commands. No choice with the Magellan.
The battery life seem a bit shorter on the Magellan… I bought an after market charger for the house…so that helps a bit!
Overall I really am happy with this Magellan… easy to use, haven’t got lost yet! Plus the price that I got from Amazon was not too shabby either!!
Great GPS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am very satisfied with this unit. It’s quick, and the large screen makes it very easy to see and interact with.
PROS:
No “recalculating” phase; it instantly adjusts your route
Highway lane assistance is great for making sure you’re headed (or not headed) for the exits.
Bluetooth feature imports the contacts from your phone and identifies the caller. Can leave my phone in my pocket!
Big screen with predictive text means I have to type less to get the city name.
Powers on as soon as it receives power from the car, which saves a little time.
Lots of POIs; seems like everything is in there, no matter how remote or small!
AAA rated POIs; I haven’t used this yet, but I’m excited to on longer trips.
CONS:
Mounting system isn’t very stable, which means the unit wobbles as I tap the buttons. This makes it harder to type.
Is capable of traffic monitoring but ONLY with the purchase of the traffic receiver. Predictive traffic is OK, but hasn’t been really helpful.
Bluetooth has only been used a few times; it kept dropping calls a minute or two in, and the other caller had a hard time hearing me.
Voice recognition worked great when testing it in the driveway, but on the highway it could not hear/understand me.
I would recommend this unit to a friend.
My 2nd Magellan GPS since 2000
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have owned the Magellan NAV750 since 2000. It still works good but just too bulky for vacation. On my trip to Tampa, I decided to give it a shot of buying a new GPS and go to a city I never been before. This is a good test for me to see how well GPS works in providing directions without the driver knowning the destination ahead of time.
After using it for 4 days on vacation and 3 days on my commute route, I do believe the technology has gone better in the past 4 years.
First of all, there are plenty of GPS out there now, it is hard to say which works the best. I choose this one for the screen size, bluetooth speaker phone and optional traffic add-on feature. Garmin has similar package but the unit has smaller screen and many folks complain about low volume from the speaker phones.
Navigation: Easy to use and search for point of interest.
Traffic: Good option but not very useful as it doesn’t really tell you exactly what to expect in traffic. It just lights up and give you ETA delay in minutes.
Trip computer: Good feature where it provides Live ETA time.
Viewing: Good size. So so with glare in daytime. sun shade is needed
Accuracy: Very accurate just like the old Nav 750. Better than my Toyota onboard GPS
Routing: Reasonable good. Not the smartest when mixing both highway on local.
Voice: Confusing. Too much information about before the turn and when to turn. I do notice there is a delay sometimes when you need to turn based on voice command. I would just look at the screen instead of voice direction.
Bluetooth: Not very good pairing my LG VX11000 phone. Auto connect doesn’t work well so you end up missing the call.
Manual connect when you board the car is fine.
I am satisfied overall but I would definitely compare the garmin larger screen version ( which they don’t come with lifetime traffic option ) since traffic is pretty much useless for now ( except it integrates with ETA time .)
As for the price, this is probably the best buy ( Amazon dropped $25 after I bought it… too bad I bought is from one of the amazon’s market place store at the time…)
Magellan Maestro 4700 – Excellent GPS Selection
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought this product last month and have enjoyed it ever since.
* The large screen is very helpful when driving.
* Voice commands are adjustable and great when you are not able to look at the screen.
* Plenty of notice is given prior to having to make a turn.
* Compact.
* Easy to read instructions and tutorial on the screen.
* Has a back-up battery in case the car is not on (you can choose not to use this feature).
* When I choose not to follow the exact directions given, the GPS readjusts immediately to a new route.
Definitely would make this purchase again!
Great GPS

This is a reliable, affordable, compact and easy to use GPS. Have been using this for more than a month. I was able to travel to JFK airport nyc starting from Parsippany ,New Jersey without any issues.
Pros: Easy to understand, install, use and setup. Detects signal easily, Reliable,
Cons: Bluetooth doesnt work as expected., is not able to map effectively in Parking Lots…
Absolutely love it!!! Essential for my travel.

Okay. I have had this GPS for over a month and it is working flawlessly. I travel quite a bit and drive all over the place. This GPS has become an essential and invaluable tool. When I received it I download and installed the latest updates for the device and have never had a single problem. Everything seems to working perfect or better than expected. Would definitely recommend this and if you are in a good coverage area for the traffic receiver, buy it. For me, the traffic receiver is working great for live traffic updates and helps me to decide which route to take. I have a couple of options on my commute and it is very cool the way this GPS unit can calculate the time between routes with traffic time included and let you choose which way you would like to take. Loving this Magellan!!!!

I had a Tom Tom which was terrible. I love this “Maggie”. It is easy to use and much more accurate. I like the ding sound when you are to turn “right here.”
Solid GPS For the Money
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is overall a great buy for the money although I have had trouble at times hooking up my phone to the built in bluetooth.
Huge help
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We purchased this because we were flying out of state and had a bit of a drive from the airport. We also knew we would be visiting different places and wanted as little worry as possible. The Magellan 4700 was a huge help….took the stress out of going places…just followed ‘the voice’! Easy to set…easy to understand…and we really liked having the written, turn by turn directions available as well.
Magic of Magellan
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Only had the Magellan for a month now but totally impressed with the ease of operation and features. The only complaint is that we entered our home address for “take me home” and it takes us to a house about 7 houses away from where we live. Of course it’s no problem since it’s unneeded at that point but still makes me wonder “Why”.
GREAT GPS…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I borrowed a friend’s Magellan when I last traveled… I found it really easy to use and never had a problem with its reliability! When I returned, I researched the Consumer Guide and decided to purchase a Garmin (because it was rated higher than the Magellan). I was expecting something fantastic… but was sadly disappointed when I tried it! I quickly returned it and purchased the Magellan Maestro 4700.
The BEST feature about the Magellan is its audible turn reminder… it “chimes” at the moment that you should be making the turn. Quite a valuable tool when you are driving in unknown areas/states. The other features are pretty standard and work well. The only downfall to this item is that it does not come with an ac adapter/charger:(
Why does this device give so many false exit announcements
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought the Magellan Maestro 4700 and was impressed with its looks. When taking a freeway drive using the MM4700 it constantly computed the miles the next intestate or highway. Even worse, it said I would be exiting my current route at each interchange even though I was going to continue on the same interstate. I called Magellan and they acted like this was something they were not aware was happening. I was told to update the software and let them know if that worked. I updated the 4700 and it still broke down each trip in pieces reflecting distances to the next interchange and the voice said I would be exiting my current route even though I knew that was not correct. I found this annoying enough to return the MM4700 to Amazon and they were good enough to take it back and give me a full refund.
On the good side, the mounting attachments are much better than the Garmin unit I previously had. The MM4700 was also better than the Garmin Nuvi 1490T at resetting when I chose to take a route different than what it had set for me. The maps of Garmin and Magellan are both not up to date. The promenade I live on is shown as a street even though that street was converted to a promenade with a different name than the street over three years ago. I had thought the technology and maps would be better than what is currently offered. I guess it takes longer to get current maps updated in computer files installed in these units and the updates are out of date too. They both use the maps of the American Auto Club which are current and correct in printed form. I guess I will wait until a unit developed that combines the best of the Magellan 4700 and Garmin 1475T. The latter was not good at resetting when I changed the route it suggested and the mounting attachments were not as good as the Magellan 4700.
Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
still not sure I love it
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was really excited as this is our first GPS – but it is taking way too long to acquire a signal – I drove for 10 minutes one day before it acquired! Also, my husband thinks the volume is not loud enough when turned to full volume – I had read previous reviews and knew this could be a problem. Truly, if the acquiring thing does not work better, I may considering sending it back as last time it caused me to be lost in Philadelphia!
Great GPS !
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Magellan 4700 is easy to use, great graphics and many easy to set options.
Bluetooth speaker phone linked easily and works well.
Love this GPS !
GPS works well
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This gps works very good but the bluetooth isn’t the best. You can hear the caller very well but they cannot hear you. The caller says it sounds like you are very far away and is hard for them to understand what you are saying. Overall I think it was worth the price but if you want it for the bluetooth don’t buy it.
WHEN I RECEIVED A GOOD UNIT, I APPROVE
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
AFTER RECEIVING THE UNIT I TRIED IT OUT AND FOUND THAT I HAD TROUBLE ENTERING DATA AND HAVING THE TOUCH SCREEN BEHAVE. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD TO ENTER AN UPDATE AND THINGS WOULD BE FIXED. ( I did not believe this and i was right). I when on a trip and cound not enter locations so it was useless. Upon my return home I called customer service again, got their attention and arranged for a replacement. It took a week and was paid for by Magellan and the replacement unit works great. The voice gives me instructions in perfect English and I am now pleased.
first gps navigator
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I saw this item on Amazon as a best deal and decided to give it a try. I was a little hesitant as I am a bit techno well…challenged and thought I probably didn’t have much use for a device like this anyway. This is a great GPS, I can say this is just what I never knew I needed. It was soooo easy to get going. I love it. By mistake I bought two and am so glad I did, I will be giving the second as a gift to my sis
Excellent value
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Although I haven’t had a lot of time using this yet, it seems to be what I was looking for. I had a garmin C330 before and this is much easier to position in the vehicle due to its much thinner body. The bluetooth hooks up every time I get in the car even though I have a 3 year old phone. I would recommend this. The special one day price a Amazon.com could not be beat (less than half price).
Useless for my trip
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this unit and I really liked it, I had planned my trip to Disney World with my family for months, 1 week ago when we were in the car ready to drive (from NJ) I enter the address of our hotel in Orlando, 15 seconds later I get the message: “YOUR DEVICE NEEDS TO BE RESTARTED TO INCREASE PERFORMANCE, PLEASE WAIT WHILE YOUR DATA IS SAVED”, wanting to believe that this problem would stop in the next few minutes I got all the way to Washington with the same problem, making this unit totally USELESS. I had to take an exit, get into DC and find a Radio Shack and buy a Tom Tom which took me all the way to Florida without any problems.
Works perfect, excellent GPS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This GPS works really well. Its directions are accurate and is very easy to use overall. I never downloaded the manual and it took me less then 5 minutes to figure everything out on it. It calculates routes very fast and if you miss a turn it recalculates a new route almost instantly. I purposely missed turns on a route I know well to see if it would correct itself, and it did. Out of the 15 different route changes it made, it only missed 1 turn that would of also worked, but I don’t think this is a major deal since the goal is to just get you to the destination and if I wouldn’t have skipped some of the previous steps I would of gotten there quicker anyways.
The chime before each turn is a great thing and comes in very handy, especially for me as I tend to miss a lot of turns and end up having to turn around. The screen is very clear, even with the sun shining brightly on it I could see it clearly. The satellite signal is also very strong, even through the mountainous round I live on the signal was 100%, even my cell phone loses signal driving this road.
I did order a AC plug to charge it, but this is NOT needed, it charges quickly through the USB and your computer (as long as it is on). Out of the box mine charged in under 1 hour this way.
Overall this GPS is great and everything I hoped for. Great price and great features! Only GPS systems that I think are better are the factory Ford units in their vehicles, so unless you own one or are going to buy a new Ford, I would recommend this Magellan 4700.
Outstanding Device
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I went to Best Buy to try out all their demos and fount this Magellan the easiest to work. It took 1 or 2 key strokes for the city and the street and the Smart Fill finished the rest for me to select. It only took me a matter of seconds program my destination.
The display was excellent with clear voice ques to get me in the right lanes in plenty of time before exiting or turning. It also displayed how far and in what direction my next was going to be.
This is my second GPS. My first one was a Garmin and required me to type every single letter for the city and street and was difficult and complicated for me to work the device. I finally put it away never to be seen again.
I got this one as a gift from my wife and now I never go anywhere without it. It’s actually fun to use!
worked until getting to the street I wanted
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I took this gps on its maiden voyage out of town. All went well until I got onto the street I needed and it told me to make a U -turn and took me back around again to the same place. When I turned, it again told me to make a U -turn. This time I continued as I knew I was on the correct street a la street sign! A little scary if I was out of state or a city I did not know at all or at night!
garbled voice for text to speech
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I really wanted to like this unit and was looking forward to getting it. I previously owned a Garmin but it stopped receiving satellite signal so I wanted to try out a Magellan. There are a lot of perks this Magellan have over my old Garmin such as:
1) ding-dong at turns, so nice to have!
2) enter addresses by zipcode (when the cities you visit have long names it’s great to be able to do it by zipcode instead!)
3) screen was very big and beautiful
4) lane assist was helpful, although I wished it would actually *say* which lanes you needed to be in and not just display it onscreen.
The reason for the low rating though is because the text to speech was amazingly awful. Although the speech for static phrases was nice and loud, when reading streets or highways it would sound like barely a whisper – and a garbled whisper at that! I tried upgrading because it seems like a firmware problem, but that didn’t work. It was really distracting trying to strain your ears to make out what the unit was saying, and after a while became just plain annoying. I know it sounds like it might be a minor thing, but I ended up having to look at the screen constantly because I didn’t quite catch what it was saying.
I might try out another Magellan because of the things I did like, but for this one I just returned it… such a disappointment!
LOVE this GPS!!
. I just plugged it in and started playing away and just like that all was right in the world.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had navigation in my BMW that I spent way too much on and absolutely hated (those guys may know about performance but technology? Not so much). It was difficult to use, took forever to search for a place if you didn’t know the exact address — it really was the most user UNfriendly device I’d ever used. So I read the reviews on this one, picked it up and could not believe how much it absolutely blew away the BMW nav! Within one quick roundtrip (2 miles away), I had transferred all of my currently stored addresses into this new system (at stop lights of course…..though with the voice commands I suppose I could have done it while driving). I didn’t even have to read the manual to figure out how to work everything — that’s how easy it is (and I’m blonde
Finding the signal takes the exact same amount of time that the one installed in my car did (I had assumed it would take longer just because it’s not always stationary like the car), and there are so many features on the Magellan that I had no idea I was missing on the BMW nav. I have plugged in random little places just to see if it would recognize them by name (I like to put all my products to the test
, and it’s passed 100% of the time. And we’re talking about hole in the wall food places three towns over that my BMW nav would have had a meltdown trying to find. I know I’m not doing a good job explaining just how awesome this system are, but it seriously blew me away enough to not purchase navigation on the new Audi I just got. And its awesomeness compelled me to write a review which clearly, I haven’t done before (I’m sure you all gathered that by now
I had seen other handheld devices and always avoided them just because I found the map/directions hard to follow or I didn’t trust that it would know where I was (I won’t bore you with my GPS nightmare in Seattle a few years back using a borrowed handheld, but trust me — had I had this I would not have ended up in Canada). I’ve had this for about a month now and am still amazed everyday at how happy this makes me. And the fact that all this comes for about $150 at Amazon is just amazing to me (I would have spent 2.5k on the Audi one had I not discovered this in time). I’ll stop rambling now but I can’t stress enough how much I LOVE this GPS. Thank you, Magellan!!!
Great Buy
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I actually bought this item for a friend and she just loves it, heck, I love it. If I did not already have a Garmin (from 2007) I would definitely buy this one. It is truly state of the art with many great features. If I could justify it, I would buy this for myself, but unfortunately, there is nothing wrong with my Garmin, except I need to get it upgraded.
Maestro
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this unit because I had a Mio 300 which had issues with the power cord staying connected, and therefore, losing power and shutting off. This is a nice unit, although actually lacks a few features that the Mio had. One thing I do not like about the Maestro is that, as an oil delivery driver, I make stop after stop, and have found that once you get to an address, the unit then defaults back to the last destination. Why this happens, I have no clue, although I find it slightly annoying.
Also, I have tried to set a “Home” destination, but then when I press “Home”, it will default to another address that I have entered throughout the day. Yet, when I find My “Home” address, it shows as “Home”. The manual that came with the unit really does not provide much, and is no help for the things I have mentioned here. The bluetooth feature does work, but I have not really taken advantage of it, as my oil truck rattles, and is a little noisy to try to use this feature while driving.
Overall, this is a nice product. I think it does have its glitches, and a few things could be improved, but the screen is large, and clear, and the bluetooth feature is a nice added option while driving.
I am happy to have found this product through Amazon, as I did definitely save money purchasing it here! I have not used Amazon before, but I will think to use it again for my next online purchase, depending what I’m looking for!
Great Value
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I wanted a fairly full featured GPS with a large screen. Everything works as advertised, for the most part. If I have a complaint, it is with the sound quality. The bluetooth connects well and reliably, but the voice quality of the caller and my voice to the receiver left much to be desired. So much so, that I turned that feature off and use my bluetooth headset instead. The unit is bright and clear, and beyond picking some routes that are not too direct, I have only praise. To be fair, I have not updated the software, and I think there is an update to be had. I am a Mac user, and the software is only for Windows.. so 2 faults! Recommended anyway!
Great GPS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am very pleased with my Magellan 4700. Finds signals quickly and I really like the signal immediately before a turn. Magellan has been quick to add software updates and from what I understand, more are on the way. The bluetooth reception is my only complaint but I don’t really care about that anyway. IMHO, a near perfect GPS.
A MAP IS BETTER THAN THIS MAGELLAN!!!!!!!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This is my second Magellan 4700 with in a month. Both gave me terrible directions! If I didn’t know my way—-I’d still be lost. TECH support told me I needed to up date this BRAND NEW UNIT. I would have to go through their registration process (which would take about an hour)before I could update the unit and he didn’t think that would correct the problem. Also, it doesn’t respond to voice commands. I thought this unit would be great, but it is a nightmare—twice over. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE MAGELLAN 4700. I’m sending mine back!!!!!!!!!!

Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Item stopped working after the third time I tried to use it. It wouldn’t turn on. The voice recognition feature is horrible. I am just afraid of buying another Magellan unit. Reason I bought it was mainly the predictive traffic. Didn’t get even chance to try. The day I connected the link to the GPS, the GPS wouldn’t turn on.
