Good stuff
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
They are a little high tech for me, and im having truble figuring out all the features. I like the wisper and vibrate alert for hunting. The range is exagerated, I dont think that they wont do 30 miles. But I also did not expect them too. All in all good buy.
Good radios!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought these radios based on many good reviews and have found them to be quite nice. The max range is listed as 36 miles, for a flat area LOS communication. I have had good luck with them at the 13 mile range. My GF was inside the house holding a radio and I went to a hill on our country property about 13 miles away with many hills in between and we were able to communicate fine. NEAT! I did let them charge for the full 24 hour period that the manual called for and obtained an $85 FCC license to use the high-power channels to be legal.
No regrets – pleased with purchase.

I purchased these for use while hunting. The terrain where I used these was fairly thick timer, and very hilly…Blue Ridge mountain area in north Georgia. These radios fared much better than some shorter range (16 and 26 mile) radios (also made by Midland). The 36 mile claim only seems possible if you’re on open, flat terrain (i.e. the ocean or a desert). These radios work well in hilly terrain up to a few hundred yards but don’t expect much more than that. Not sure how other manufacturers’ radios stand up to these but, I would purchase these again and would definitely recommend them over other Midland handhelds that I’ve used.

I love the radios and the multiple headset applications. I really would like to know where in the hell they were able to pick up from 36 miles away??????? I went hunting and from about a mile away and some scatered tree’s and small hills I could not talk to my wife back at the house very well. I think they must test these thing from mountain to mountain with overcast skys and direct line of sight. I would love to talk to the CEO of Midland and ask him WTF !!!! The range sucks, but other than that I love the radios and the accesories. I am in the military and know a lot about many different types of radios and am very familiar with freq. hops. I can use the basic Asips radio to play some music and bounce off towers and talk to people in other states. So I am damn near an expert with radios and I’m telling you these radios barely picked up a mile. Good luck with your choice. Good buy for the money but for the money you can buy a much better product as long as you have your GMRS licsence.
Great short range communications
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I use these radios for hunting in dense hilly pine plantations. The radios are feature rich and you get a lot of radio for the cost. I am also a ham radio operator and my handheld ham radios cost 3x as much for one radio. I don’t know how they can offer them for so little. The battery life is very good, the tx/rx audio quality is excellent, they come w/ metal hydride batteries and drop in charger, and they even have vibrate call.
The usable range is always a question w/ handheld radios. These are UHF radios w/ tiny antennas and they aren’t going to replace a ham radio base station w/ a 15′ antenna, repeater, or cell tower. It has also been said that pine needles resonate around 440mHz which also antennuates the signal. We find the usable range to be about 1/2 mile to 1 mile in the woods. We are rarely any further apart than that so they are very handy. Your mileage may vary.
The one thing I don’t like about these radios is they are darn hard to find if you drop it. We’ve lost 2 so far.
Better than most
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I used it in the mountains hunting elk and was able to talk 6 miles over a hill. I also used it in heavy wooded areas in northern Minnesota. 1 mile begins to stretch it in the heavy timber and brush. It works for me. I have 10 mile radios that only go 1/4 of a mile in heavy timber so I’m happy. How about a heavy timber rating!
Good Radio’s Worth the Money, Excellent for Hunting
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
These radio’s work very well after you get over the fact that no portable radio will work long range in an urban setting. The advertised 37 mile range is not realistic in most settings. No portable radio will work over about a mile unless there is an unobstructed line of sight to the other party such as over water (or maybe mountain top to mountain top). These are 5 Watt radios. The FCC limits the power output on GMRS Radios to 5 Watts maximum. Some brands are not even 5 watts, however these are.
I use these radio’s at our hunting camp in Central Georgia. In the thick forest, the maximum range is about a mile. As indicated above,I have used all major brands with Midland the best and Motorola coming in second.
What I like:
Maximum Range
Camo finish
Push to Talk (PTT) works very well, the switch is solidly built
The included headsets work well but are somewhat uncomfortable to wear
More features that you will ever need
The Value Pack with included accessories is a great value and better value than any other radio on the market.
Waterproof, ok to use in the rain
The Amazon price is a real bargain for the radios and all the accessories that are included.
3 Year Warranty (as far as I now the others are only guaranteed a year)
The rechargeable batteries last a long time.
What I don’t like:
The unit is somewhat bulky and slightly larger that most radios on the market. However they still fit in your shirt pocket or on your belt with the included belt clip.
Summary:
If you want GMRS radios and accessories that work well at a bargain price, this is the one to buy.
Midland GXT 1050 VP4 gets Thumbs Up from Kayakers
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
i purchased this unit to remedy communication problems when fishing the flats of Tampa Bay with fellow kayak fishermen. These units proved effective in an open water environment. The sound quality was exceptional for the moderate price handheld 2 way radio. The volume level could be a bit higher for this environment but the sound quality makes up for the volume level. The NOAA weather alert work great and is extremely helpful for all anglers. Initial set-up can be a bit overwhelming for those who fail to read the instruction manual or those unfamiliar with synchronizing two way FMS/GMRS radios. The earphone attachment is adequate but need to be improved for universal fit. A word of caution to those who believe these radios are “waterproof” as the packaging suggests. They are not. A more accurate definition is that they are “splash proof.” Don’t attempt to immerse these radio in any salt water. Also, you find that dropping these radio from four or five feet can result in a broker antenna. If you looking for a relatively “smart FMS/GMRS radio” with good sound quality and aesthetics then seriously consider the Midland GXT 1050 VP4.
Good radios
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The range and soud quality on these are much better than the Motorolas that I have been using. Unlike those other radios, they are compatible with all of the other ones that that people I know use. The one problem that I had with them is BOTH of the headsets had the same problem, the button that you use to talk with broke, so now I have to spend $30 to get new ones.
No way, not what it says
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Bought these so when i went hunting i can acually call my wife, i live in the country side so not to many obsticles in the way, she works 5 miles from my house, i figured 36 miles WOW i should definitly pick her up from 5 miles with little abstaction, NO WAY, Not even Close. i think they doged out about 1 mile up the road. so people dont listen to false reviews on products that just arnt what they say they are… I give this 1 star for lies and false advertisement, i will however give it a 3 for short range pick up
Great 2-way radio
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
These radios are the best, very light weight, excellent signal and a very long battery life even in high signal mode. the charger is very compact and efficient and the headsets are very comfortable. And the price is great.
very good
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I ordered these and received them in two days. Overnight shipping. I have used these every time I go hunting. In the woods, I’d say the reception was pretty good as long as your terrain is flat. Belt clip them to your bibs or pocket and use a headset instead of fumbling for them all the time. Get rid of the headset that comes with them (too bothersome and don’t fit worth a darn). Get the avp4 (surveillance type) and you’re set. Plenty of choices for channels to select and all the other features are a bonus. The animal alert calls are pretty cool too. If you use a headset, remember to run the wire under your shirt and clip your collar. If not, be ready for a tanglesome event. Will be using them every time in the woods.
Worked Great

Got these for deer hunting this year & they worked great. Glad that I got them to keep up with my step-son while we were hunting.
Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased these to upgrade from my old Icom FRS radios which were well built (Japan) but not enough range. These have some nice features such as NOAA weather channels, ability to use 4aa batteries when the battery pack depletes, dual channel scan and two types of squelch codes CTCSS and DCS. Some of the features were not very useful to us but nice to know they’re there if ever needed. I liked the silent option. I understood that there was no way they would do 36 miles. I just wanted a useful way of calling back to camp. From mtn top to valley we got 7 miles. We even achieved a signal from my lost partner headed up the wrong valley 3/4 miles on the dark side of the mtn. If you understand how radio waves work you can use these to their fullest extent. My old FRS radios worked out to 18 miles hill to hill. So these should work just fine. One con is the squelch crack at the end of transmission, not good if you want stealth.
I would recommend these..
Good unit
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Product was better then expected. I have bought various radios before including Cobra and wasted my money on these poor performers which will not reach out as they claim.
This product does the job. My hunting buddy just ordered one and is glad he had seen mine and tried it out and was impressed with the features.
He is now a proud owner of this product as well as I am.
Great radios
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
These worked well right out of the box. Range in a suburban, densely populated area is about half a mile. I loved the camo appearance and the head sets that came with the unit. These are much better than the previous Motorola units I own.
great 2-ways!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
These radios are great quality and offer a crisper, clearer sound than others I have used. I’ve only had them “in the field” for about 3 weeks, but so far they’ve held up to everything I’ve asked of them. Recommended!
Good radio’s

I haven’t used the item yet but I have used Midland for many years.
My expectations will be met, I have no doubt
Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4 is no better then any other radios I have used. The GMRS side of the radio will not let you work repeaters for those that are licensed for this service. Range is a joke and the audio could be better the drop in charger only shows when the radios are charging but the light remains on after the battery is fully charged unlike the Talkabout Motorola radios I own. I feel this could shorten the battery life as they are always charging. I called Midland and they told me to charge the radios 8-10 hours max so I don’t over charge and damage the batteries. You can not adjust the squelch on these radios as one radio does not hear as well as the other. Another call to Midland was of no help.On the plus side the ear microphones work well and the display is readable day and night.
great units a 4 1/2 star review
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Really like these for clarity
easy of use and charging
headset comfort and usability
range, size, overall feel.
The only thing I would improve is the Vox (voice activation) there is a general lag so you have to get used to losing the first word you say to open the mic…then its crystal clear after that.
Best feature would being able to charge them in the truck with the 12volt and maybe the cradle holder as it makes the truck charging even more convenient.
GXT1050VP4 50 Channel
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This radio set is very nice and easy to use, it comes in handy while hunting when it is a two person trip. They are also very nice to be able to comunicate when needed. Range is not as advertised due to its size and capability for transmitting, so that was not an issue. I was very happy with the results of this set and look forward to many more years of use with this during hunting season and other projects.
Midland 1050
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased this product for hunting purposes. Having the 650 and 850 series, I bought the 1050′s to keep up with longer tranmissions. While the 1050 series transmits at longer ranges it doesn’t come close to the 36 miles range as advertised. The furthest transmission was 18 miles. I suppose the key word in the product description “is under ideal conditions!”. I would love to know what an ideal conditon is. Standing on the Moon with no obsticals in the way? Having the planets all aligned?
Despite my grumblings about never being in ideal conditions, the 1050′s are satifactory and a well built product.
Maybe Midland could come out with a two way that transmits out to a hundred miles, therefore achieving a 36 mile transmission claim!
Well worth the money
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I owned a pair from the leading competitor to midland and even at the same rating for range, could not receive or transmit through heavy urban obstruction from inside a vehicle for more than a mile. This Model was able to do both at 3 miles with the added problem of multiple Ham radio transmitters in line with my signal. In open country, The signal carried for a measured 12 miles, and that, because the radios were not farther apart. for $80. How can you go wrong when considering all the features and the performance.
Good but could be better
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The size and shape could be improved to gain more portability and handling;
The single-direction hook isn’t as functional as those who can spin so the device may drop when you seat or so;
It would be appreciated if the photos also show a escale so the customer may have an idea of the actual size of this product (I myself bought them assuming the devices were smaller).
Don’t expect 36 mile range
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
All manufacturers exaggerate the range of these little radios. I have used these to hear users on top of a 14,000 foot mountain from 6 miles away, but there were no obstructions between me and them. That’s the best distance I’ve achieved. I had a lower power version of these and they worked well for several years before one of them died. I saved its battery as a spare for these and I can still use the one working with these. Most Midlands use the same rechargeable batteries, although you might carry at least four alkalines along if you expect to be away from the recharger for more than a day. If you’re camping out you might want to establish a timetable to use them to extend battery life. They have excellent channel security, either with just two of them or in a group. Hearing other users of the same channel can get very annoying. The numerous privacy choices prevent that almost 100%. Like others, in a city or any enclosed space the range is very limited. The headsets can be handy of you’re fishing or hunting. I’ve used 2-way radios for more than 40 years. The first ones I had were the size and weight of bricks. These are state-of-the-art, light, with good clips and among the best currently available.
AWESOME radios!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
These 2-way radios are awesome! They are fairly compact,
work extremely well, & are eveything the seller advertises
them to be. The product arrived very quickly & was packed
well. We would definitely buy from this seller again.
