Sony DVD/VCR Combo
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The unit itself is very nice and I can see it has many features, however, it requires (or that is my understanding) to connect to a cable box. My cable goes directly from the wall to my TV, so I am not able to watch DVD, turn it off and watch TV. I have to un-plug the chord in order to watch TV. If that is not how it should be done, the manual certainly does not guide me through what needs to!

Works great for what I wanted. I use it just as a player. I have another Sony SLV but it has all the connections so you can record easily. If you want a combo player and not interested in recording this can’t be beat. Price was good as well. Phil

Does the job well.

Ease of use – Easy, hook up and go. One thing I like is that the remote control uses a switch rather than logic buttoms so you know from across the room whether you are trying to control a vcr or dvd. The operations of the rest of the remote controls could be clearer. A big problem I have is that the remote has a LOT of plain buttons that all look they same. In a dim room I usually hand to to somebody else to fast-forward, etc.

Features – exactly what is advertised and expected. No frills.

Picture Quality – Haven’t used it on a discriminating system but it looks ok to me.

Sound Quality – Haven’t used it on a discriminating system but it sounds ok to me.

I use my machines as basic players. Seems like I remember the manual on this one being a little vague.

One thing I like is that the remote control uses a switch rather than logic buttoms so you know from across the room whether you are trying to control a vcr or dvd. I will probably buy another one.

Bottom line is I think I’ll buy another one.

Sony Keeps a Good Design
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I already had one of these units which I purchased several years ago. I was both surprised and pleased that Sony kept this good design in production. A good VCR is difficult to find today. Some brands jack up the price by including a DVD recorder, which I have no use for, other brands had terrible reviews.

Previous reviews confirmed my selection

This unit seems to be very cheaply made. We were surprised to find that we couldn’t set the TV channels that we wanted to record. The unit was purchadsed as a back up to the TIVO in another area of the home. The video player is very poorly made and makes noises at it rewinds and has difficulty rewinding. We would never purchase this item again.

Bought this for my dad for his birthday/Father’s Day (they’re 2 days apart). Easy to hook up and show my parents how to use the remote as well. Fast shipping as well!

This unit had no antenna connection. You couldn’t hook it up to get a TV channel. All this unit was good for is coping a DVD. I changed the wires in a bunch of different combinations and still couldn’t get a connection. The only thing I was able to do with it was set the clock. I had this unit wrapped up and sent back the next day.

Donald’s Sony Review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Sony Combo DVD/VCR came out of the box and was installed with ease. The setup for the DVD/VCR was easy to follow and worked fine. This is not the 1st DVD/VCR owned, but was one of the easiest to install.

Our RCA DVD/VCR lasted for only 3 years. I would hope that the Sony will out perform the RCA. Who knows in this day and time of electronics what quality you will fine.

The Sony was packeged as well as any electronic equipment I have ordered off of the internet. It was wrapped in a great deal of bubble-wrap. It would have been hard to have damaged the product without intentially trying to damage the product.

I have only used it briefly at this point, but the performance is fine.Sony SLV-D380P DVD/VCR Tunerless Progressive Scan DVD/VHS Combo Player

The Missuz bought this unit for me as a christmas present last year, although I didn’t need it, until I finally decided 6 months after to replace my cheapo memorex dvd player (which worked just fine, thank you very much) with this better branded (so I thought) combo unit. And guess what?

The remote didn’t work.

Of course I tried fresh batteries… and another two on the outside chance one or both of those was defective… and PfOO-pppppp-ffft! Bupkiss. The over the shoulder “take a hike” thumb.

Which leaves me with a product that works well enough with the limited controls on the body of the unit, so long as I fancy crawling back and forth across the carpet to it on my hands and knees… which, by the way, I don’t.

Sony VCR/DVD Combos
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have bought two of the Sony SLV-D380P dvd/vcr combos in the last two years. All the negative reviews about this item are true. After about a year, the vcr function in the first one just completely crapped out. It wouldn’t tape and it wouldn’t play anything back. I finally went to the local appliance store where I bought it & told the salesperson what I wanted: A good, dependable dvd/vcr combo that wasn’t a Sony. He told me that they were the best, and in fact that same model was what he was pushing me to get. I asked about other brands, specifically Toshiba (by the way I once had a JVC which was absolutely junk. A friend also had the same model JVC, and she had the same experience). The salesperson said that Toshiba’s were way too complicated and that Sony was the best. So I was talked into buying another one. Well after about 3 or 4 months, the rewind has started to go. It makes a terrible noise when rewinding & you have to stop, wait, and then continue rewinding, repeating this process more than once. I wish electroncs manufacturers would realize that because vcr tapes have been around for a very long time, a lot of people are and will continue to look for dependable vcr players. Sure, we can install separate vcr and dvd units, but the combos are so much more convenient. Can anyone out there recommend any good ones?

We bought this for my 75 year old mother to replace a VCR/DVD player that died. It came quickly and it works very well but setting up the remote took three people to figure out, one of whom teaches computer applications and two who are engineers. Once we got it programed it works great but getting there was something my mother could never have accomplished on her own. The designers forgot that not all users are technological whizzes.

Have been looking for a replacement but couldn’t find just a player until I was referred to Amazon. Great delivery and just in the nick of time as our previous one completely conked out two days after delivery. We’ll see if it holds up 5 days a week, 12 to 14 hours a day of playing a mix of Dvds’ and tapes.

Good service and a good price

Sony SLV-D380P DVD/VCR Review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have always preferred Sony products because of past history and have had very few complaints over the 40 years of buying their products. They are typically competively priced for a varied list of other quality products. I purchased this product to play older media for my grandkids that still prefer some older media on older formats. The price was great for a combo system. The product delivered without additional delivery charges and on time as stated by Amazon.

Sony tunerless, VHS/DVD combo
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This product is a very good recorder and player with a very long life. Our recorder/player runs on an average of twelve hours a day all week long. We replace them about every four to five years. Excellent service for a machine that runs that many hours. This is why we try to locate this specific machine even if it is used and or refurbished. Price to use ratio is five out of five stars.

You will need an adapter or an outside tuner if you record off cable or satelite but these machines also come with built in tuners. We use both kinds with equal success. We even use one we bought used on eBay three years ago!

Think twice before you buy here !
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The product (a dvd/vcr combo) that I purchased did not work at all. I got the company’s permission to return it, and did so. They acknowledged getting it back, but I never got any credit for it or any payment of any kind from the company. I’m not sure that they would even remotely fit into the “reputable classification”. I would highly recommend that you find somebody else to make your purchases from.

The remote-control function doesn’t work.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Though the DVD/VCR is brand new, the remote control can’t work.

The seller has no knowledge and ideas on this, though she tried to help me.

The Sony Co. says they can fix it, and I need to mail the machine to them. However, I have no confidence on these guys.

So now, I have to manually control the DVD/VCR when I want to watch something.

I have two Sony SLV-D380P DVD/VCRS already and I am in the process of getting another one from Amazon for my home office. They work great. I record TV programs with the timer recording but you have to make sure you change the TV manually to the channel you want to record. It doesn’t have an automatic feature to do this operation. I don’t have any problems playing prerecorded DVD discs or VHS tapes. I don’t need a tuner because I have satellite. I am very happy with this product.

A. Kawai May 13, 2010 at 12:00 am

You Get What You Pay For
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I intended to replace both my DVD and VHS player with one unit. I purchased the Sony D380P for that purpose. Unfortunately, I did not do adequate research to realize that this unit does not have a tuner. I cannot record TV programs without the assistance of my old VHS player. I program my old VHS unit to record TV shows. It defeats the purpose of my original intent.

No Problems Here
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought the DVD/VSH Combo a few weeks ago and so far, so good. I find it easy to understand, very simply remote. It does exactly what I needed it for and the price was unbeatably when compared to similar models on other sites. It doesn’t have a tuner but that wasn’t a feature I was actively seeking so that doesn’t factor in my decision on whether this is a good product or not. Again, no problems here!

Bought 2 units – Both Garbage
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Shame on Sony for putting out such an inferior product. I have always been a Sony customer. And have many good Sony electronics; TV, Radio, Vaio computer. Good company / good name.

So when I needed a ‘good’ DVD/VHS player for upstairs and out at the cottage I went with Sony. Yes its tunerless, yes you can only record one thing at a time, yes its their low end product line. But man its gotta at least work!

Both units failed to deliver DVD functionality. Open/close operation is erratic. Tracking initiation is slow`and inaccurate. Skip forward is down-right psychotic. One monent the DVD side works, the next its sputtering. Both units – both psycho. Very irritating!

I would expect this type of merchandise from some ‘Gold Line’ low line brand. But from Sony? Baloney!
